JOnquil LeMAster    Artist

Welcome to my website and a visual record of my works.

I have been a sculptor and exhibit professional for 29 years. Throughout this time, I have provided a variety of skills and services to new and seasoned clients, including exhibit fabrication, project management, and exhibit design consulting. I pursue my own artwork in sculpture and painting. Many of my expressionistic landscape paintings are in private and public collections in the United States and Canada. The sculptures live on in institutions and private homes throughout the U.S.

I began sculpting trees and natural environments for zoo exhibits in 1982. At that time, I was privileged to be in the forefront of a new movement of zoo and aquarium design called “immersion habitats,” that emphasized natural settings for the benefit of both animals and visitors.

My first large project was at The Bronx Zoo, a part of The Wildlife Conservation Society . For three and a half years, I hired, trained, and managed artists and technicians while building a forest of life-sized tropical trees for Jungle World. While in New York I developed techniques and procedures for sculpting trees and vines out of resin, epoxy, and rubber.

These early experiences formed the basis for sculpting techniques I use to this day. Most sculptures are designed and developed through the use of a scale model. I use photography to assist my memory and to remind me of all the glorious parts of nature that inspire my artwork. I draw to capture the imaginary landscapes, and dream images, which become my artwork.
